Similarities between Playing World of Warcraft and CLIL

This article argues that playing World of Warcraft (WoW) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) have a number of similar features. We base our argument on findings from three studies. The first (Sylvén 2004/2010) is about CLIL and non-CLIL students at upper secondary level and aims to investigate what effect, if any, CLIL has on the incidental acquisition of vocabulary. The second (Sundqvist 2009) is about extramural English and aims to examine its potential impact on learners’ oral proficiency and vocabulary. Learner identity in EFL: An analysis of digital texts of identity in higher education

This study explores learner identity (LI) in digital texts of identity (DTI) produced by college learners in English as a foreign language (EFL). In so doing, it aims to shed light on learners’ connections of their learning experiences across time and settings, and their impact on the various learner identities that form their LI. It also intends to elucidate how learners construct powerful learner identities in and through their digital discourses. Nominal Agreement in L2 Speakers of Italian: Suggestions for a Teaching Plan

International audience; This paper addresses the topic of adult acquisition of nominal agreement in Italian, a crucial issue in teaching Italian as Second/Foreign Language. Building on a corpus containing spontaneous and semi-spontaneous production data from two advanced L2-speakers of Italian, I show that nominal agreement can be problematic even in the last stages of the acquisition process. The discussion of the instances of missing agreement in the corpus suggests that these are not due to a missing knowledge of the agreement rules in Italian, but instead on processing and production. Artikkelissa tarkastelen, miten transitiivi-ilmausten kaytto kehittyy ylakouluikaisten suomi toisena kielena -oppilaiden Eurooppalaisen viitekehyksen (2003) taitotasoille arvioiduissa kirjoitelmissa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittaa, miten nuoret kirjoittajat kayttavat yleista ja monikayttoista ilmaustyyppia, transitiivikonstruktiota, oppijansuomessa ja miten konstruktion toteutumat muuttuvat ja varioivat kielitaidon kehittyessa. Erilaiset kannettavat laitteet ovat lisääntyneet viimeisen muutaman vuoden aikana ja levinneet yleiseen käyttöön. Tämä levinneisyys on johtanut myös siihen, että videopelejä on saatavilla enemmän ja pelaaminen on yleistynyt. Samalla pelaamisen tutkimus on lisääntynyt ja videopelit on havaittu hyödyllisiksi. Toisaalta globaalisaatio ja teknologian kehitys on johtanut siihen, että englanti on tullut osaksi arkea entistä enemmän.
